Finding a Folder You have just Downloaded
If you have downloaded the entire PennSTAR program, it will come down in a folder named pstar.exe [for Windows] or pstartxt.sit [for Macintosh].

If you have downloaded a free sample, look for a folder name that includes txt.zip or iep.zip [for Windows] or txt.sit or iep.sit for Mac.

If you lose track of your downloaded folder, use your computer's Find File or Search utility [Click Start>Find>Files or Folders] to look for a folder [file] name as shown above.

Stuffit Expanded will usually create a folder and deposit it in plain view on your Macintosh desktop. For example, pstartxt folder or pstariep folder.

However, WinZip may deposit your downloaded folder in a location on your C drive that is not visible to the naked eye such as unzipped files. We suggest you use Find File or Search to locate a folder with the following in the name: pstar.

eBooks. If you have downloaded the eBooks version of the PennSTAR Master Curriculum, and have the Microsoft Reader software on your desktop, PennSTAR will open, ready to use.

If you do not have Microsoft Reader and want to download a free copy, click the following link:

Using the Contents of the PennSTAR Folders

All files in the folder are in ASCII txt format, except the documentation folder, with an .rtf extension. [Rich text format.] If you double click an rtf file, it will probably open into a format you can read. If an rtf file does not open when you double click, check the documentation that came with you word processor for opening a Rich Text Format file.

Outcomes/objectives should open with both word processors and database programs. However, activities may not open with a database program because there is usually a limit on the number of characters in a field.

  1. Locate the folder and file you wish to use.
  2. Make sure your word processor or database is set to ASCII or text [.txt] format.
  3. A database program may open into single-record format; you may wish to view your objectives as a list.
  4. Use the View menu to select the List option.
