The first First Lady, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington was born into a world of elite social custom and privilege in the 1730s. Little did she know that she would marry twice, give birth to four children — losing two of them to illness in childhood — and bear witness to the Revolution and the creation of a new nation.
She would be amazed to know that in 2008-2012, it would take 22 people with high-sounding titles to lead the First Lady's staff.
There has never been anyone in the White House at any time who has hired such an army of staffers whose sole duties are the facilitation of the First Lady's social life. Why does she need so much help, at taxpayer expense?
Hillary Clinton had three. Jackie Kennedy one, Laura Bush, one; and prior to Mamie Eisenhower, social help came from the president's own pocket.
By the way, don't forget a makeup artist and "first hairstylist," both of whom traveled aboard Air Force One to Europe.
Those who have been out of work for months will be interested to know that these salaries add up to
$6,364,000 for the 4 years.
Just one more reason to keep Obama off the 2012 ballot!
