Much of the 2011 Drawbridge content was political in general and anti-Obama in particular. I am still convinced that Obama is America's worst president, bar none. However, I have decided to give Obama a rest on the Sundays of 2012 and concentrate on spiritual and/or educational content, only.

Today, I will present Angels [A Type of Celestial Being] and Dragons in the Bible

Angels [A Type of Celestial Being] and Dragons in the Bible

A topical review of the appearance of holy angels in scripture

Angels are a common topic in this century. Many authors, including Billy Graham, have written books on the subject. Touched by an Angel was a popular prime-time CBS drama which treated the concept of angels in a reverent and relatively-scriptural manner. There are at least three categories of celestial beings in the Bible:

1. Angel: Their job descriptions will be detailed below as Guardian, Messenger, Servant, and Terminator.
2. Cherub: a type of spiritual being mentioned in the Bible. Example: Gen. 3:24. 3. Seraph: is a type of celestial being in Judaism and Christianity. Example: Is. 6:1-3 These are separate and distinct beings and should not be confused with each other.

Example: angels don't have wings but the seraphim described in Is. 6 clearly have wings. There are several misconceptions regarding angels in the Bible.

1. There is no record of angels having wings. If you do a computer search of the entire text of the Bible, looking for angel and wing, there will be no hits. Angels have great speed but their power of locomotion does not come from something as antiquated as wings. Maybe something like Star Trek's beaming but never wings!

2. Second, angels are neither male nor female. They are totally asexual! I always visualize angels as male superheros!

3. The term cherub appears several times in the Bible but it should not be confused with angel. Angels have distinct personalities, duties, and functions. While cherubs are supernatural heavenly beings, they are largely ornamental and symbolic. Their job descriptions do not come close to those of angels. The term angel appears from Genesis to Revelation. This site will list many references to angels in the Bible, but will be limited to holy angels. To learn about evil [fallen] angels, click the following link maintained by J. F. Cogan: Demon Possession Handbook. The term Dragon referes specifically to Satan and Bible references are limited to the Book of Revelation. See chapters 12, 13, 16, 17, and 20.

Angels fulfill different functions in the Bible. The scripture references will include the following categories:

Servants, and

These designations are mine and should not be viewed as scriptural. In my opinion, the text and context describes these four roles. In some cases, an angel could fulfill two or more roles. Guardians: The first appearance of the word angel is in Genesis 16 regarding the flight of Hagar from the home of Abraham and Sarah and this is a guardian angel.

However, many people think of guardian angels in connection with children. This comes from a statement by Jesus in Matthew: Matthew 18:10: Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

Beware child-abusers, pedophiles, and all manner of persons who are guilty of mentally, sexually, and physically hurting children. You may be able to escape the reach of the law in this life but you don't want to tangle with an angry guardian angel! And remember, there is no statute of limitation in eternity! Many people think of angels in a positive role as guardians of their way.

PS 91:11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Messengers: The classic example of a messenger angel is the announcement to the Virgin Mary that she is to be the mother of the Messiah: Luke 1:35. Servants: My favorite chapter in the book of Revelation is Chapter 5. Here we see angels as servants and their task is that of praise and worship

Terminators: The most fearsome role of angels is that of terminators. When the need presents itself, angels are available to be God's strike force, His SWAT team, His early response team. Angels as terminators appear throughout the book of Revelation. However, this role is best illustrated in Chapter 20 of Revelation: When it comes time to put Satan away, God won't need to do it. He won't even send Jesus to do it. He'll just snap His finger and deputize a holy angel.

The scripture references listed below are many (not all) of the instances angels are mentioned in the Bible. The four categories and the comments given with some of the verses, are my own. They should not be considered scriptural.

Guardian-Messenger Genesis 16:7: And the angel of the Lord found her [Hagar] by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

Messenger-Terminator Genesis 19:1: And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

These angels are used here as messengers and are on recon. Later, they may have been part of the strike force that burned Sodom and Gomorrah to the ground.

Messenger-Terminator Genesis 19:15: And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Guardian Genesis 21:17: And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

Messenger Genesis 22:11: And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

God's Plan of Salvation always involved sacrifice. First animal sacrifice, then Jesus, the Lamb of God, but never human sacrifice.

Messenger Genesis 24:7: The Lord God of heaven, which took me from my fathers house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.

Servant Genesis 28:12: And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

Messenger Exodus 3:2: And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

This is another classic example of an angel in the role of messenger.
