Leroy "Newt" Gingrich Gingrich was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but raised in Hummelstown, a small nearby borough. A college professor, historian, and author, Gingrich twice ran unsuccessfully for the House before winning a seat in the election of November 1978. He was re-elected ten times, and his activism as a member of the House's Republican minority eventually enabled him to succeed Dick Cheney as House Minority Whip in 1989. As a co-author of the 1994 Contract with America, Gingrich was in the forefront of the Republican Party's dramatic success in that year's Congressional elections and subsequently was elected Speaker of the House.
Newt hit a grand slam during the Saturday debate. Scott Pelley was moderator for CBS News. Major Garrett was moderator for the National Journal. ["Major" is his first name.] Newt has decisively won every one of these GOP debates and it hasn't been close. Those who say he's unelectable or just can't win are most likely those who have heard of him but haven't heard him or his ideas or his vision. And when they do he wins you over with his strength, passion and sheer intelligence. This country is in deep manure. Newt is the right man in the right place at the right time to pull this country back from the abyss that Obama already has us knee-deep. Newt just may be the man! I especially loved the way Newt shot down Scott Pelley on the difference between civil law and war. gel
