Review of Newt 2012 Videos
Although an innkeeper is talked about in songs and stories about the birth of Jesus, he isn't mentioned in the Bible at all. The Bible just says, There was no room in the inn. Luke 2:7.
Maybe that means, "There was no appropriate place in the inn." Bethlehem was in the midst of a mandated Roman census the night Jesus was born. I'd like to think the innkeeper was a kind man, who gave Mary the quiet privacy of the stable, rather than the public upstairs sleeping quarters above the bar.
If Jesus had been born in such a place, Mary and Joseph would most likely have been separated during the birth.
Typical inns of this era consisted of two large rooms. A room on the ground floor was used for serving customers food and drink. An upstairs room was rented to overnight customers, by the bed.

If there had been room in the inn for Mary and Joseph, they would have been rented beds on opposite sides of the curtain.
