Review of Newt 2012 Videos
In this Drawbridge post I will explain my unhappy experience with the computer clean-up program of DoubleMySpeed.Com [DMS].
My wife had been commenting about her computer being slow, so I thought I would surprise her and speed it up for her.
DMS was being heavily advertised on radio at the end of last year so I picked it. The commercial was mildly amusing, another hook.
DMS is like many other similar programs. First, you go to a web page http://www.doublemyspeed.com/home.html?ref=DoubleMySpeed.com
Where you can download the cleanup program for free. Free sounds good but this is the last time you'll see the word "freed".
Then you will be invited to scan your computer for problems that could contribute to your speed problem. Sure enough, the free scan turns up some astronomical number of errors and problems with a button to "fix" the problems.
However, if you click the fix button, nothing will get fixed until you pay a certain amount with a credit card. I think DMS charged around $40 to fix all the problems that appeared on my wife's computer.
That seemed reasonable to me so a provided my card number and DMS went through the motions of fixing the computer and bringing it up to speed.
However, shortly after DMS had done its thing, I had an occasion to open a jpeg [.jpg] picture file. The computer made a nasty sound and I was told that the program that had always opened picture files for years was no longer available.
So, I called a toll free number that was displayed prominently on the DMS home page and asked for help. That started a lengthy game of phone tag until I finally found someone who could deal with .jpg problems.
However, I was told I would be charged $200 for the service of fixing what DMS had damaged.
Since this was fairly close to Christmas and my son-in-law, Steve, was coming to visit from Nashville, I opted to wait and give Steve a shot at bringing back the ability to work with .jpg files.
Steve is very handy around anything digital. On a previous visit, he had installed expanded memory in this computer and also hard-wired it to the router downstairs. I was sure Steve could fix the .jpg problem for the price of a home-cooked meal.
I was right. Steve had jpgs popping up whenever needed and no nasty sounds nor error messages.
